Wow! I just returned from the Podcast and New Media Expo held in Ontario, California this past weekend. What an incredible event! Some 3000 attendees from 30 countries were learning, sharing, and networking about the latest and greatest innovations in media for getting your message out into the marketplace.
The star of the show: Podcasting! Why? Well, if you Googled “podcasts” in October of 2004, there were just 24 podcasts listed. If you Google “podcasts” today, millions and millions of podcasts will be shown. Why this amazing increase? Because podcasts are all about “the shifting of time and place.” I can listen to a podcast when I want and where I want. And I can multi-task.
I can listen on my IPod (or other MP-3 player) while I exercise, drive my car, or fly to my next engagement. How cool is that? As one Expo speaker alluded to, “podcasting is to radio what Tivo is to TV.”
Here are some key insights and observations from the Expo (and from my media experience, as well) that I trust will prove useful in expanding your brand through podcasting:
- We’re still in the first inning of podcasting. It’s like the Internet was ten years ago. What an opportunity to be in the forefront of this new medium!
- Content is king! The richer your content the more successful your podcast will be.
- Stick to what you’re good at in creating your podcasts. Follow your passion and expertise.
- There’s a rush to quality when it come to production. Do you want to be known as the Rolls-Royce or the Yugo of podcasts?
If produced properly your podcasts will position you as an expert. You will become the “credible source” in your field. - Podcasting is the “Relationship Component.” It reinforces your relationship (as a speaker, author, consultant, etc.) on a weekly or monthly basis with your niche market.
- Podcasting creates an ongoing appetite for what you have to offer, which may include everything from speaking to consulting to products.
- There are terrific opportunities for sponsorship for your podcasts if you have high production values. In fact, without quality production you can’t attract quality sponsors.
- It’s critical that you use popular (and clean) language in your podcasts. You must communicate in a manner that is clearly understood by everyone in your target audience.
- Make it easy for your audience to subscribe to your podcasts, not just through itunes but other delivery mechanisms, as well. The world wants easy access to what you have to offer.
Obviously, I’ve only scratched the service of what it takes to expand your brand through podcasting. However, if you plan ahead, create viable marketing strategies, and produce high quality podcasts, you can earn you a lot of money and create fantastic “top of mind” awareness for your brand, at the same time.
I encourage you to join the new media revolution! The future has never looked brighter!
