This blog thing is just getting out of hand. I’m having to invest more and more time reading about stuff that can help my business, keep my up-to-date and generally make me look like a genius. And it’s all Moe’s fault.
Here’s the problem. Certain blogs are offering too much good stuff. One of the main culprits is Derrick Moe over at The Hire Sense. We’ve written about him before - just about a year ago - in “Informed? For Sure.”
Despite his daughter’s best efforts to silence him, Derrick Moe just keeps delivering over and over and over. His topic is sales and (along with Lee Fratzke) his expertise is assessing sales candidates. These guys help companies hire and retain the right people. You know, people who can actually sell.
In their blog, Derrick and Lee scour the web for just about any research study, white paper, new statistic or factoid that relates to the topic of sales. And, they get just about everything. Is selling a part of your business?
Time out to think like Moe
If you have a market niche, do you think your readers would benefit if you kept them on the leading edge of that industry’s developments?
And, my bad. It’s not really true that Derrick Moe is stealing other people’s stuff. He’s just consolidating it; making it easier for his customers to get to the good stuff.
Bloggers even have a name for this kind of beneficial theft. They call it “linking.” It’s a noble blogging profession. But, it’s gotten a bad rap because too many people are teaching that you need links to build your traffic and optimize your site. Blogwash.
In truth, you need the links to help your readers learn more quickly. Links are important because they lead your readers to great information that they can use immediately. Which makes them come back to your site for more. Which increases your traffic. It’s not about the links, it’s about the content.
Just a few days back (well, every day, really, but I have to choose one example, ok?), Derrick posted another useful article. This one was about instant messaging and its increasing importance in the sales world.
Yikes, More Email!
The article was titled “IM is Actually Like Live Email.” Good article. Made my skin crawl, but that’s just me. I don’t want yet another technology that I’ll have to toady up to 24/7.
But, it seems that instant messaging really does have increasing importance in the sales world. And that’s Moe’s niche. Kinda’ like everyone’s niche, wouldn’t you say?
Anyhow, as he always does, he “linked” to a great, mind-challenging article from Manage Smarter, called “Rethinking Instant Messaging” by Marcia Jedd.
Who cares what Moe thinks? Sorry Derrick. Moe gets mileage out of what Jedd thinks. But, Jedd gets attention from Moe’s readers. It’s all kind of “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.”
It’s called “linking.” It’s what bloggers do when they do it well. And Derrick Moe does it best. Study the guy. Do what he does. You’ll delight your own readers, and live to tell about it.

Great post! I enjoy Derrick’s blog and have it (Select Metrix) listed on my blogroll. His content is always fresh, relevant and interesting. I totally agree he is a model for “linking” and how to do it well.
Looking at the great picture at the beginning of the article has me thinking, someone needs to tell his daughter to forget about covering his mouth. Grab his hands so Dad can’t get at the keyboard!
The guy just won’t give up.
His latest blog post is about a British report sponsored by the British Library and the Joint Information Systems Committee. It’s all about young people’s Internet search abilities (or, more specifically their lack thereof). It’s about what schools and libraries and society should do about the issue - and it’s a report Sheryl and I can’t live without.
Nice going Derrick. Have you expanded your news alerts to cover our backs, too? Nice job.
