February 16th, 2007 — Employee Motivation, Internet Research, Business Intelligence, Information Literacy, Competitive Intelligence
It comes down to this. You’re wasting your company’s time. Your employees are wasting your time. Your senior staff is wasting your time. Indeed, new studies show that employees are squandering vast amounts of time because they lack the training to find and retrieve information effectively. Continue reading →

Stupid Motivational Tricks
December 28th, 2006 — Employee Motivation, Internet Research, Information Literacy, Business Services
This week a Wall Street Journal writer suggested a radical idea to America’s corporations. Jared Sandberg recommended that companies make a New Year’s Resolution to “Lose the goofy team-building exercises.” Think rope courses, paintball parties, firewalking and goldfish-swallowing. Are You Selling or Learning and Selling?
November 10th, 2006 — Sales Lead Generation, Sales Strategies, Internet Research, Information Literacy
People just don’t know what to do with us. We get all sorts of reactions when we tell them that “information literacy” and Internet search skills can streamline their business and increase their sales. Most people are indifferent. Some feel threatened. Many think they already “know-it-all.” And a few (too few) are genuinely interested. Let’s take a look at someone in that last, “genuinely interested,” category. Just Try to Stop This Downtown Train
November 7th, 2006 — Information Literacy, Business Services, Competitive Intelligence
“All of my dreams just fall like rain
All upon a downtown train”
Tom Waits
Jon Shallert called last week to tell me about the movement to save downtown Ellensburg, Washington. Like a lot of downtowns in rural America, its very existence is threatened by a host of economic factors. Ellensburg is about a two-hour drive from Seattle. That same day New York Senator Charles E. Schumer and New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg wrote a Wall Street Journal article about saving downtown New York. It’s somewhere out east. Which effort do you suppose will get more attention? Continue reading →
The Selling Power without the Search Power
November 1st, 2006 — Sales Lead Generation, Sales Strategies, Internet Research, Sales Management, Information Literacy
I like Selling Power magazine. But I have to admit I don’t understand it. Here is a quote from an article (The Seven Qualities of Top Sales Managers) written by the founder of Selling Power, Gerhard Gschwandtner – “We live in a knowledge-based society where information moves at lightening speed.” Uh-huh. Then why can’t I find articles about how to increase sales through better Internet search skills that can more effectively mine the exploding information universe? Continue reading →
Is Anyone Doing Sales Training for the New Economy?
October 21st, 2006 — Sales Lead Generation, Sales Strategies, Sales Management, Information Literacy
You’ve just finished reading your favorite sales newsletter and that creepy feeling starts to set in. Or, you’ve just attended a sales training workshop and you know you’re missing something, but you just can’t put your finger on it. So, you read the blog the sales trainer directed you to, but you still feel strangely empty and edgy. Don’t worry, it’s not your fault. It’s the fault of your sales trainer. They missed a small event called – shhhh… don’t tell anyone – the Internet.

Will Answers.com Replace Google?
October 14th, 2006 — Internet Research, Information Literacy, Google
We read articles all the time about search engines that might just be the next “Google replacement.” Google owns most of the world, in case you hadn’t noticed, and some folks just aren’t happy with that. I think the word “competition” has something to do with it. We’ve already written about the growing power of Google’s competitors in another post (“Chris Sherman Predicts the Future”). Now, we’d like to introduce you to a search engine that doesn’t replace Google, but instead, “plays well with others.” It’s called Answers.com and you’ll find it at www.answers.com.
