I'd pit an "seo" against a "designe"r any day to see who can rank a site.

SEO's don't even try to rank for "|city| web design" - those targets have no idea they want seo, they want a website. It's after sites are built by those companies where the clients learn what optimization is (because they're invisible), and they search for them. THEY are the gurus, not the designers. You're right, be careful who you hire, or you'll be hiring someone else later to fix things.

To see who can rank a site, consider that actual optimizers specialize in seo, hence the terms are very competitive compared to designers. Search for "|city| seo" and you'll see who can do it.

Webolutions does male some "pretty" designs, but I know that seo's later promote the sites.

If a "web design" firm ranks highly, it's because every site they have "designed" has a footer credit to them with "design" in the anchor text. It isn't a skill an example of optimization - it's a given. A quick Yahoo site-explorer query shows that.

Thanks for the reminder, Steve. The only thing about keywords to remember. Ask your web optimizer if people are actually searching for the phrases you've optimized for. If not, you can come up number one all the time and it won't mean diddley.

Hey Michael, it's always good to give folks some pointer so they don't get taken to the cleaners. I would suggest to you that coming up #1 for web designers and being a fabulous SEO are not one in the same. Great SEO starts with great code. I can't tell you how many pretty website we have had to do a complet rewrite on their lousy code. I would ask a web designer what specific strategies they employ. Addiditonally, have them show you a half dozen or so sites. Are those sites ranked on the first page for their keywords and are they getting conversions? Curtis is right about the time and effort it takes for great SEO-becasue it's a moving target-Good information. Steve
